Brain plasticity: effects of judo |
|
Tuesday, 01 July 2008 |
Plasticity, or neuroplasticity, is the lifelong ability of the brain to reorganize neural pathways based on new experiences.
Wantuir FS Jacini,Lab of Neuroimaging, Department of
Neurology - University of Campinas, studied the changes in grey matter in Judo Players. Previous studies have shown that physical
exercise involving the planning and execution of complex
movements are associated with changes in
brain structure.
Jacini found that increased gray matter volume in judo players is
possibly induced by the practice of a complex
motor tasks. More specifically, the gray matter volume within
the primary motor cortex, memory and
associative areas are particularly affected by the
practice of judo.
